ECHO WEST is an electronic Project from Dortmund/Germany which saw the light in 1994 with the explicit desire to let their own musical and sound-technical ideas flow freely and received its final project name in 2000.
The project name ECHO WEST revolves around the vision that electronic music is a part of our western culture and that we – the consumers and the creators – take part in this culture in both a creative and a destructive way. The music echoes personal experiences, which are shaped into musical expressions by general and more particular environmental influences. ECHO WEST’s minimalist sound is already quite peculiar because of its instrumentation, composed of an analogue monophone Moog-Prodigy, diverse synths, a drumcomputer, effect devices, a microphone, a bass, and a guitar. The sound emerging from this setup generates an atmosphere often referred to as cold and melancholical. The musical genre it fits in is quite often referred to as ‚Angst-Pop’. Some of the lyrics are wrapped into some sort of Dadaist artificial language. Content-wise ECHO WEST is treating – amongst others – the influence of the city on its inhabitants and the social and emotional downsides of the human being, resulting from that.
Musically ECHO WEST is in general influenced by the 80’s Neon-Industrial-Underground scene, more particular by bands such as A Blaze Colour, Blackhouse, Ceramic Hello, Dark Day, League Of Nations, Iron Curtain, Skinny Puppy, Nocturnal Emissions, SPK, just to name a few.
